The 25 year project

I'm sure we're not alone in admitting that there have been times, during projects we've worked on, when we've felt like it has taken years to get from the initial idea to a working product. Well today, on the eve of its first beam, we're sparing a thought for the eight thousand physicists from over 85 countries who have waited nearly 25 years to see the Large Hadron Collider come to fruition.

On the 10th of September a beam of particles will be passed round the 27km ring at 11,000 revolutions per second, marking the first step in a £5 billion experiment to recreate the conditions a fraction of a second after the big bang and discover the 'God particle'... either that or it will create a black hole that swallows the earth.*

Learn more about the LHC on their, definitely didn't spend too much of the £5 billion budget on it, website.

* highly unlikely.
